Here are a few tips on how to build your horses trust!

Building your horses trust is so important. It means you can enjoy being near them and riding them.
Lunging your horse before riding is always a good idea as a way to connect, get focused (and perform a health check). The key is to be firm, gentle and kind. People who try to dominate their horse in an aggressive way will not be able to gain their horse’s trust.
Boundaries
If your horse is bossy and is resisting your commands, bring a foam pool noodle into the paddock or use the end of your lead rope. It really works! If you have a foam pool noodle tap it on the ground gently and ask your horse to back up. If your horse does not back up, tap the noodle harder on the ground and say firmly but gently, “BACK UP”. If it’s still not working tap the horse on the shoulder with the noodle lightly and say “BACK UP” and your horse should listen. If you have a lead rope do the exact same but instead of taping it on the ground swing it in circles. Just make sure you don’t accidentally hit your horse or yourself with it!
Spend lots of time with your horse.
Spending time with your horse is key to building trust and a great relationship. Grooming your horse is a wonderful activity. Not only does it keep you connected with your horse, but it also helps your horse relax and enjoy your company. Flat work and simply walking around in the paddock is also fantastic quality time. Especially if you are firm but kind. Give your horse plenty of positive encouragement, pats and soothing words. Next, jumping little jumps can help build trust and connection; without the added performance pressure. Once again, don’t forget to reward your horse with pats and positive words when they perform correctly and keep focused on you.
