How To Tell What Horse Is Right For You!

Sometimes people choose their horse according to looks or breed. But that’s not always the way to go. Here are a few tips on how to chose the right horse for you:

Choose the right size.

You don’t want a horse that’s way too small for you. Choosing a horse that is too small could hurt your horse’s back. Further, you probably wont get the experience you want. A horse that is too large, on the other hand, will prevent you from becoming a confident rider. Often, parents make the mistake of getting a large horse for their child. They assume that the child will grow into the horse. Unfortunately, this is not a good idea. A large horse can often intimidate a child, turning them into a nervous rider. Further, the horse will sense the child’s anxiety and start to take advantage of that!! If you are unsure about what size is right for you, consult a trusted horse expert (trainer, instructor, veterinarian) to help you.

Choose the right breed.

The best horse breeds for a beginner are probably the Morgan, Paint, or Quarter horse. They are often quieter horses. However, be sure to get to know their individual personality before making your final choice. By the time you are an intermediate or advanced rider, you will know what horse breed is right for you.

Choose the right personality.

A horse’s personality will determine if he or she is a match for you and your personality. It’s best to always ask the current owner about the personality and behaviour of the horse. But don’t just take their word for it! Spend some time with the horse and get to know them – using both ground work exercises and riding exercises.

Take someone experienced with you.

You should always bring an expert with you when checking out a horse that you find interesting. Even if you ask your riding instructor to come along – it’s worth the investment!

Get a Vet Check.

It’s absolutely necessary for you to invest in a Vet Check prior to purchase. Although you may really feel excited about a particular horse, it can be devastating to quickly find out, just after purchase, that they are very sick or in need of an expensive treatment.
