Here are a few tips on how to de-code horse body language:
1. A happy horse has a loose jaw – sometimes even hanging low. If a horse starts to drool when you are brushing it, that’s a pretty sure sign of relaxation and ultimate happiness. Relaxed nostrils and a drooped head are also signs of contentment. A happy horse has their ears forward.
2. An annoyed or angry horse will have their ears pulled back and pinned down. They are pretty much saying “leave me alone!” or “back off!”.
3. If a horse’s ears are pointed back but not pinned, that’s totally ok. The horse is just listening.
4. When a horse’s head is elevated, the horse is focused on something and may be distracted. You will need to get their attention back.
